1. Turning a hose on outside and waiting for the water to begin to flow out of the other end. I like this especially when the end of the hose is very far away, so that you can just barely see the water.
2. The fingerprinted appearance of a peach pit.
3. Gel pens.
4. Frowning, if I feel like it.
5. Layered food. (Cake, dip, lasagna…)

3. What you can do with a little water and color. (Gorgeous photos.)
4. Free drinks.
5. When clicking the “Remember Me” checkbox actually works.

This is my 40th Small Things list. Not to be glum on such an update, but I’m pretty surprised I’ve been able to think of 200 things I like.
I’m happy I started this project (all the way back in January), though. I’m especially happy it’s kept me updating this weblog—because who knows how often I’d write in here without a schedule to stick to.
Anyway, here we are.
1. October. It’s the month I got married, y’know.
2. Wearing socks now that it’s cooler. I’ve missed them.
3. Rose gardens.
4. Raspberry-filled dark chocolate squares from Ghirardelli.
5. The phrase “onyx eyes.” It’s my personal cellar door.
I’ll probably end my version of this project on the final Thursday of 2009, but I was thinking that if I’m ever at a loss for something to draw, or just something positive to dwell on, I’ll come back here and go through the lists I’ve made for inspiration. Maybe you can do the same.

1. Bats. I really like the bat room at the zoo where it’s all dark and squeaky.
2. Boxes of hair dye. I don’t dye my hair now (I don’t even get real haircuts), but I did in high school. The world is different when you dye your hair.
3. Vacuumed patterns in the carpet.
4. Peanut brittle.
5. Early Liz Phair.

2. The way seagulls on the beach all stand facing into the wind.
3. Opening the windows during a slight, misty rain.
4. Cuddling.
5. Awkward Family Photos.

1. Becoming more frugal.
2. Reading more books.
3. Nice, loud, non-thumping car radios.
4. Shiny green beetles that land on the windowsill.
5. Bright white sand that’s not too hot for bare feet.

1. Crunchy chocolate chip cookies.
2. Lying under a ceiling fan and looking up.
3. Reading before bedtime.
4. The way a good song sounds the second time you hear it. The first time, you’re just giving it the same chance as all the rest—but the second time, you’re anticipating your favorite part. And then by the third, fourth, fifth time, it’s like an old friend.
5. The way I can use my weblog’s Search function to see if I’m ever being redundant in my weekly list of Small Things. I thought I might have counted the cookies before, because really, they’re cookies and they’re always delicious, but not once have I ever mentioned cookies on here! I did mention the Cookie Monster, though.
